
GENERAL OPERATING PROTOCOLS FOR EMS-HAZMAT
1. The Northeast Wisconsin Hazmat Task Force has been activated and staffed with two HAZMAT paramedics who have completed the HAZMAT training.
Paramedics assigned to the EMS Team must have successfully completed part I and II of initial response to Hazardous Materials Incidents and Basic Life Support and Hazardous Material Response. Paramedics assigned to the EMS Team must maintain a Wisconsin EMT Paramedic license.
Paramedics must be in-serviced by the Medical Director or his/her designee on the protocols and medications.
2. The HAZMAT paramedics are an integral part of the HAZMAT team. As such the primary function/responsibility of the HAZMAT paramedics is to the team. Functions/responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Establish Medical control
Perform “Pre” and “Post’ entry exams of team members
Constant monitoring of team members
Treat and transport team members as needed
Act as liaison between the team and other EMS agencies when responding outside the City of Oshkosh.
Maintain appropriate records and reports
3. The involved substance has been positively identified.
4. On-line medical control has been established.
5. Use of any specific antidote will not compromise other duties of the HAZMAT paramedics.
6. Rescuer safety continues to take priority over any potential antidote use.
7. The EMS Team of the HAZMAT team operates only in a safe environment or “cold” zone.
