Washington Avenue District

Originally part of three farmstead claims, residential construction did not begin in this district until the 1870's as initial growth in Oshkosh centered around Main Street and the area to the west.  Development in the Washington Avenue area, which peaked between 1890 and 1917, provided a fashionable alternative to living in the already established Algoma Boulevard area.  While some early residents of the area were associated with the lumber industry, many others were attorneys and other professionals representing the employment diversity that was beginning to develop in the city.
